Jun 19, 2010 · The issue is that FreeNAS by default regularly used the boot drive for logging. Most USB flash drives have very cheap and crappy chips that are good for plopping photos/documents/movies on, but are terrible for constant IO ops from not just FreeNAS, but also the Jails that most people use too. So they fail and leave the FreeNAS box unbootable.
